Unleashing Performance with ERL Series 1 Brake Pads for 1989-2005 Mazda Miatas

When it comes to spirited driving, every component of your Miata plays a crucial role in delivering an exhilarating experience. Among these components, the brake system stands out as a key factor for both safety and performance. The ERL Series 1 brake pads, designed specifically for 1989-2005 Mazda Miatas, offer a remarkable upgrade that balances ultimate braking power with comfort. Whether you take your Miata to the track or enjoy winding roads on weekends, these brake pads provide the stopping power and feel you need.

Why Brake Pads Matter

Brake pads are the interface between your car’s braking system and the road. They convert kinetic energy into heat through friction, slowing down your vehicle. For a car like the Miata, known for its nimble handling and sporty nature, having brake pads that respond precisely and consistently is essential.

Older or generic brake pads may not offer the level of performance needed for spirited driving. They can fade under heat, produce excessive noise, or cause uneven wear. The ERL Series 1 brake pads address these issues by delivering:

  • Consistent stopping power under various conditions

  • Reduced brake fade during aggressive driving

  • Comfortable pedal feel for daily driving and spirited runs

  • Durability that extends pad life and protects rotors

ERL Series 1 Brake Pads: Designed for Mazda Miata Enthusiasts

E1 Autosport has engineered the Series 1 brake pads with the Mazda Miata driver in mind. These pads fit perfectly on all non-sport models from 1989 to 2005, covering the NA and NB generations. The design focuses on maximizing braking performance without sacrificing comfort or usability. Particular focus on usability for Spec Miata drivers was paramount during production.

Two Compound Options for Different Needs

The Series 1 brake pads come in two compound choices:

  • R Compound: This is the track-focused option. It offers higher friction levels for aggressive braking and better heat resistance. Ideal for drivers who take their Miata to the track.

  • S Compound: This compound balances performance with a wider temperature range. It provides strong braking power with less noise and dust, making it suitable for daily driving, while still providing heat tolerance and proper modulation for track use.

Choosing between these compounds depends on your driving style and how you use your Miata. For example, if you participate in road racing (i.e Spec Miata, STL, ITA) and/or frequent track days, the R-Compound will give you the edge you need. If you mostly drive on the street or compete in Autocross, Time Attack, or Open Track Day style events, but want improved braking feel on the street, the S-Compound is a great choice.

This dual utility means you don’t have to compromise. You can upgrade your Miata’s braking system once and enjoy improved performance whether you’re commuting or pushing the limits on a racecourse.

Real-World Performance and Feedback

Pre-release Series 1 Brake Pads on blank rotors after 10 events of use.

Our team personally tested pre-release versions of the Series 1 brake pads to ensure quality and performance before offering them up for sale. Our mission is quality and honesty. Bad or Underperforming products will never be offered for sale by E1.

Over the course of the season, the brake pads were tested in Autocross, Time Attack, Sprint Racing, and Endurance Racing conditions, providing results that exceeded our expectations tenfold. After

7 Events, over 50% of the pad material remained, and rotors were showing little wear due to pad machining (reduction in rotor thickness due to pad material). This means you get more out of one set of pads and rotors.

Tips for Getting the Most from Your ERL Series 1 Brake Pads

To maximize the benefits of your new brake pads, consider these tips:

  • Rotor Usage: Series 1 Pads are engineered to work best on blank rotors. However, they are compatible with all ferrous brake rotors. Keep in mind you may experience reduced pad life on drilled/slotted rotors, a characteristic that applies to all brake pads, regardless of brand/composition.

  • Use quality brake fluid: Upgrading to a high-temperature brake fluid can improve pedal feel and reduce fade, especially if you use the R-Compound pads on the track.

  • Monitor pad wear: Check pad thickness periodically to avoid damage to rotors and maintain consistent braking performance. In our testing, we can confidently compete in 10-12 races on one front set of pads; rear sets can last multiple seasons.

Why Choose ERL Series 1 Over Other Brake Pads?

The market offers many brake pad options, but ERL Series 1 stands out for several reasons:

  • Tailored fit for Mazda Miatas: Our team specifically tested and approved the Miata models of the Series 1 pads to cater to the nimble dynamic of 1st and 2nd gen Miatas, ensuring the proper balance and performance is achievable.

  • Balanced performance and comfort: Not just a track pad, but a daily driver upgrade. The dual availability of compounds means that weekend warriors can experience the same confidence as a full-prep race car, while still performing in daily driver conditions year-round.

  • Adaptability: The wide temperature range of both compounds ensures that brake fade is reduced, while keeping all-around friction levels and modulation high.

This combination makes the Series 1 pads a smart investment for anyone serious about improving their Miata’s braking system.
